Embracing Slow Fashion:
A Sustainable Choice for Your Wardrobe
In a world where fast fashion has taken center stage, it's essential to consider alternative approaches to clothing consumption that prioritize sustainability and ethics. Slow fashion, a term coined in contrast to the fast fashion industry, offers a refreshing perspective on how we can build our wardrobes while minimizing our environmental footprint and supporting ethical practices. In this blog post, we'll delve into the concept of slow fashion, explore its goals, address its sustainability, and offer practical tips on making the switch. As a proud advocate of slow fashion, Bryan van Haughton provides products that align perfectly with this movement.
What is Considered Slow Fashion?
Slow fashion is a mindset and an approach to clothing that emphasizes quality over quantity, transparency in production processes, and a commitment to reducing fashion's impact on the planet. It encourages consumers to make thoughtful, informed choices about what they wear. Instead of chasing the latest trends, slow fashion promotes timeless pieces designed to last, both in terms of durability and style. This approach values craftsmanship, fair wages for workers, and sustainable materials.
The Main Goal of Slow Fashion
The primary goal of slow fashion is to shift our mindset from disposable clothing to investment pieces. Instead of buying clothing that will be discarded after a few wears, slow fashion encourages the purchase of high-quality items that will withstand the test of time. This reduces the need for frequent replacements, leading to less waste in landfills. Slow fashion also seeks to empower consumers with information about the production process, allowing them to make choices that align with their values.
Is Slow Fashion Really Sustainable?
One of the key elements of slow fashion is sustainability. This means not only using eco-friendly materials but also minimizing waste and reducing the carbon footprint associated with clothing production. Bryan van Haughton, a brand committed to slow fashion principles, offers a range of sustainable products.
The Blouse: From our debut Spring/Summer 2022 collection inspired by 1971, this classic bishop sleeve blouse with a reversed collar and a keyhole opening in the back was originally cut from a poly/viscose blend low luster satin. In our commitment to reduce (and eventually completely eliminate) the use of virgin polyester fiber from our products across all categories by 2026, it has been reworked in 100% viscose-rayon challis.
The Lucy Blouse: From our second collection "Autumn Sea", inspired by 1975, The Lucy Blouse features a classic collar and a concealed partial placket cut from 100% silk satin, available in 5 colorways, still available for pre-order. For our upcoming third collection, The Lucy Blouse returns in 100% rayon viscose in both solid colors as well as our custom digital maze print.
The Cloud Print Trapeze Dress: A fan favorite, The Cloud Print Trapeze Dress also from our debut collection is cut from 100% polyester faux silk which is printed with our custom print in small quantities. While the fabric itself is not as sustainable, the materials are printed using OEKO-TEX Eco Passport-certified inks. The best part? It has pockets!
Small Accessories: Our collection of small accessories such as our satin scrunchies, non-medical satin face masks, and satin square scarves are made using the leftover fabric discarded from cutting the main pieces during sampling and order production.
Additionally, all of our pieces are made-to-order, and we operate inventory-free while limiting the number of samples created before your order is produced.
How Do I Switch to Slow Fashion?
So glad you asked! Transitioning to slow fashion is a rewarding journey that starts with a shift in mindset. Here are some steps to help you make the switch:
Quality Over Quantity: Invest in well-made pieces that will last for years, like The Lucy Blouse, a versatile and timeless addition to your wardrobe.

Support Sustainable Materials: Choose clothing made from eco-friendly materials, like The Lucy Blouse in both 100% silk satin and 100% viscose rayon, which showcases the beauty of sustainable fashion.
